Religion Term 3 Project: Buddhism By Nicole D.

Term 3 Religion Major Project
Buddhism
By Nicole D.

I chose to do my project on buddhism because its aways stood out for me and looked interesting. Every Buddhist I've seen seem to be very content and happy with their life, it could just be a coincidence or my imagination but I thought I'd use this opportunity to look more into the religion. I have been studying online for a few weeks now, at first it was about half an hour every second day or so until this week when I spent 2 hours solid researching online, and another hour while writing this.

Buddhism is a spiritual tradition followed by approximately 300 million people worldwide focusing on attaining the state of nirvana and developing the deep insight into the true nature of life. Buddhists don't believe in a personal God, however they do follow the basic outline/teachings of the first founder of Buddhism Siddhartha Gotama. Siddhartha was born in the Himalayan mountains as a prince, raised by his father after his mother died.  He was taught by the wisest and given everything he wanted, still unhappy with his life he left his wife and son detaching himself from all his possessions. Siddhartha traveled east and  ended up meditating in a tree until enlightenment then continued traveling across countries spreading his teachings. Siddhartha became the Buddah, although he is not a God and is not worshiped as one, he is just a man who taught the way to enlightenment.

Buddhism is believed to be more of a philosophy or way of life, the path of a Buddhist is very interesting and can be summed up by
-learning to lead a moral life
-to be mindful and aware of ones actions
-to develop wisdom and understanding

These points are very interesting to me as they never seem to be emphasized very much in many western religions although they are very simple thoughtful ways to live your life even if you aren't a Buddhist.

Many people think Buddhists worship the statues of Buddha (I was one of those people also) Buddhists that keep a statue of Buddha recognize  the statue as a sign of respect and  a reminder to smile and strive for a state of peace.

Buddhist interests me because it is such a flexible religion/way of life. There are many different kinds of Buddhism varying in different countries depending on their customs and culture. Buddhism is also very tolerant of all beliefs and religions, some people are Buddhists but also believe in another religion with it. Such as in Japan, most people are Shintoists and Buddhists as the beliefs go very well with one another.

There are four noble truths in Buddhist that are taught:

1.) Duhka-illness, pain, dissatisfaction, and anguish are everywhere
2.) Samudaya- the cause of suffering is attributable to cravings and illusions created by self centerness
3.) Nirodha- suffering is removed when one reaches a state of Nirvana (remove self centerness)
4.) Marga- this path leads to the end of suffering

Although I may not agree fully with all the concepts of the four noble truths I find them very interesting. What I can take from this is that we may be the cause of our own suffering and unhappiness , if we try and truly be happy by removing our self centred greed and attachment to material things we might be happier with ourselves.

Buddhists belief in reincarnation, being on a cycle of life and entering one of the six realms depending on ones life's karma. All while trying to attain enlightenment and reaching a state of Nirvana. The six realms include, Heaven, Humanity, Titans, Hungry Ghosts, Animals and Hell.

A part of Buddhist belief that I actually belief myself is Karma.
Karma is the law that every cause has an effect, the responsibility of ones past and present actions. Looking at the intention behind our actions, the effects on oneself and others. Although I do not belief karma to the degree most Buddhists do, I think its an important way to think at times.

I decided to learn about the basic outline of Buddhist beliefs because honestly I never had a solid knowledge of what the beliefs were. Now I know enough background to have an idea of what Buddhism is about. I do like the idea that a religion can be so open to other religious views and do not focus on the negative but rather self awareness and being basically a better person. I may not belief in all of Buddhisms practices but its defiantly an interesting concept to me. Since I've only studied online I would be interested in perhaps going to a temple or talking to someone who practices Buddhism, maybe even participating in a sort of meditation would be fun. All of the points I've written above are things I never knew about the religion, I figured it would be easier to study a religion if I was legit interested in it, but also didn't know much about it. I did know a few points and tidbits about the religion but nothing near what I know now. I don't know much about any religion, I would have to say other than my own beliefs I would be most familiar with Buddhism. I think my favourite point is the openness of the religion, it's so flexible and welcoming, very non intimidating to me. If I was going to look into Buddhism more, I would head to the Kelowna Buddhist Temple. If I ever happened to travel to an asian country like Japan I would be very very interested in going to one of their temples and participating in some of the customs or watching a service of some kind.

Biology Post Pg 746 #1-5 Catch up Work

#1.) Describe the pathway taken by the blood as it circulates through an Arthropods body.
A: Arthropod blood is pumped by a heart in an open circulatory system with vessels that carry blood away from the heart. The blood flows out of the vessels, bathes the tissues of the body and returns to the heart through open body spaces.
#2.) Describe 2 features that are common to arthropods.
A: A typical arthropod is a segmented, coelomate invertibrate with bilateral symmetry an exoskeleton and jointed appendages.
#3.) What are the advantages and disadvantages to an exoskeleton?
A: Exoskeleton protects the body. Made of Chitin and Protein it supports internal structures and attaches to muscles. However, the exoskeleton is quite heavy. The weight of the exoskeleton limits the size of the arthropods. Exoskeletons cannot grow and must be shed. During molting arthropods are generally vulnerable with thier soft exoskeleton.
#4.)How are compound eyes an adaption to the way of life of some arthropods?
A: A compound eye is a visual structure with many lenses made of thousands of parts enableing flying arthropods to analize fast changing landscapes during flight detecting predators and prey.
#5.) What characteristics of arthropods might explain why they are the most succesfull animals in terms of population sizes and numbers if species?
A: Reproductive diversity, well developed nervous systems, complex body systems, exoskeleton, acute senses and efficient gas exchange.

I hope it was okay that I did my missing assignment as a blog, It was just easier for me to get it done this way.

Pg 28 Religion

Would it be better if God were to remove all possibility of doubt?
My answer, yes of course. I mean, we would still have our problems as humans becuase we live in a sinfull world but if people werent able to doubt thier wasnt a God i think it would make things alot easier. No debates no religous struggles none of that, so yes it would be better. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, God wants to give us freedom, the freedom to make thier own choices of what they want to believe! God doesnt want to force us to beleive in Him because thats just the way He made us, He wants us to choose Him because we WANT to. And I think thats super admirable and awesome because I love my freedom as a person and I have to thank God for giving us the right to choose.

I hope this is right, its just my personal opinion. :)

Religion Pg 36 #2

Have I been mistreated lately? I wouldnt say mistreated, or abused but yes thier have been times in my life when people have been quite less than nice or respectfull to me. Actually it's when people look down on me and take control of my life is when I feel the most angry and discouraged. But I know that Jesus had to deal with 10000000000000X's worse than what I have to deal with so I better just suck it up. How might Jeses' examples and principles of behavior apply to me in my responses? I know that it is extrememly extremely difficult for me to react the way Jesus would, because he was so kind and didnt get mad in thier faces even when people acted thier worst in front of people I know I wouldnt be able to do that. When I get angry or flustlered it is hard to remember to respond the way Jesus did and wants us too because you just get so caught up in yourself and upset. Most of the time I manage to keep my temper because I know If I dont i'll feel guilty later so I better not do that...So I try and just take it all in stride and try to improve myself even if that means keeping all my anger inside.

Hope its okay i did this assignment as a blog post.

Phase 2 Religion Postzzz

How does understanding what God has done for me in Christ affect my moral character?
Sometimes I forget all the things God has done for me, and when I think about them He really has done
alot for us. Sending His only Son to earth to die for every one of our sins and then have Him rise up again and
heal and forgive everyone. God watches over us and guides us, and even though we mess up and look away from Him sometimes He still loves us and is there. When I think of this it makes me feel ashamed that I have forgotten what an awesome God we have, it makes me feel like I should do things that Jesus would do and be closer to others like He was. How do the principals of God's word guide my moral behavior? I am guessing this question means the 10 commandments, I am not going to lie I break those commandments alot and I feel like I should follow how God wants us to behave but it is really hard. Sometimes I work really hard in wanting to behave how God wants me too but then when I forget or get angry or mess up or something... I just dont care anymore and I do whatever I want. I know it shouldnt be this way but its the truth, I have to work hard in order to be close to God and not stray from the person He wants me to be.

-Hope this answers the questions.

Religion Post

How am I going to spend time with God and who will be accountable If I dont.
First of all since at this moment I am not In a bible study or religion group of any kind,
nobody else but myself would be accountable of me not spending time with God.
I have a bad habit of trying to spend time with God (talking, praying) for a while, but
then If I feel like i've messed up or something then I'll just forget about it for a long time
and convince myself that it doesnt really make a difference whatsoever. I should probebly
stop thinking this way because it really gets in the way of my personal time with God.
So I just need to make sure that I have enough time, even If at the beginning it's only 5 min
a day to talk to God or even just think about my day and Him. And if it happens that I forget
or I dont have the time then I just have to move on and try again the next day.
