Biology "Mystery Bag" Lab :D

Olivia and I were given a paper bag filled with a mystery object, the first step in our observation was to take five min each to feel what the object is and record what it feels like.

Step 1:

Observation:

-Light
-Papery
-Round
-Small
-Thin Layers
-A Bit Grainy
-Small hole or dent at the top and bottom.
-Fragile
-Dry

Step 2: Inference

Olivia and I had to try and guess what we thought the object was. Right away I thought it was
some sort of nest. Perhaps a wasps nest...

Step 3: Representation

Step 4: Inference
Drawing a picture didn't really make it easier to guess what the object was because I had a really good picture in my mind of what it looked like.

Step 5: Collaboration
(Olivia feels the object)

Step 6: Inference

No, it's not easier to guess what the object is, although Olivia and I do agree on what we think the object is.

Step 7: Visual Observation

Olivia and I opened the bag and we were correct, Inside was a small wasps nest. Some characteristics that we couldn't feel were...

-The nest was a grey color.
-The look and detail on the nest
-If the nest smelt or not (it didnt really smell like anything)
-If the nest contained anything inside that we could not reach.


Final: Reflection

Scientific investigation is the techniques of investigation and acquiring and gathering knowledge and information. That is sort of what we were doing in this lab was collaborating with our partners and gathering information in order to make an educated guess on what was inside the mystery bag. Feeling was a big part of this investigation as we could not see what was inside the bag, having two different points of view helped when we discussed what was inside the bag. This could be similar to any scientific investigation in which the individual doesn't know what an object is and has to research it and collaborate in order to find out what it is.

Goal For This Semester??

My Goal for this semester is to get good grades. And the steps I have to take to get this to happen would be to...
1.) Make sure I understand what I'm learning and If I dont to ask for help.
2.) Make sure I hand in my Homework correctly and as soon as possible.
3.) Study harder for tests and quizes.
4.) Not to get stressed over classes and tests.

These are all the steps I can think of, hopefully It will help me out if i follow them properly.

Lab #1 Solving a Problem with the Scientific Method

Purpose: To solve the problem, Determine if the two flasks contain the same liquid or not using deductive reasoning and the scientific method.

First Observations:
At first glance both flasks are filled with a clear bluish liquid that look pretty much identical. The differences between the two are that Flask B is filled all the way to the top and also has a small small brown spider floating at the top. Flask A is has only a little liquid at the bottom of the flask and could possibly be a bit bluer than the other flask.

1.) Could both flasks be filled with the same liquid? Possibly, I think that maybe both liquids are very very simmilar or maybe they are both the same but with one flask added with a different substance. I dont really have much evidence to support my answer except that Flask A is a bit bluer. I dont understand why one flask is fuller than the other...
2.)What I observed after shaking each flask (Procedure 2) was Flask A was easier to shake up the liquid because it was less full. When Flask A was shaken the liquid turned a darker blue color and fizzed slightly while Flask B stayed about the same tinted color. I am still unconclusive whether they have the same liquid or not because Flask A was less full It was shaken better so it wasnt an equal test.
Part 2: My Hypothesis
I believe that the amount of liquid in the flask, how easily it is shaken, how much air is in the flask and whether anything is in the liquid (Spider perhaps??) will affect wether the color or the liquid will turn blue or not.
Second Observations: Now flask a and b have the same amount of liquid in them. Both flasks turned a different color although when shaken flask a turned a greyish purple while flask b is a light blue.
4.) I dont think that the flasks contain the same liquid, maybe they did but another liquid was added to the flask or maybe they are both very simmilar liquids because they both behave simmilarily. When I poured out some of  Flask b's liquid Air must have entered in the flask changing the liquid maybe?? Oxygen, Nitrogen???

The Three trials gave me a better understanding and pattern of the liquids so i could easily compare and contrast their differences and simmilarities. When I got the average amount of time It gave me a average more accurate idea rather than three different ranges of times. I didnt notice any different changes in the liquids, I would shake them then wait and then they would turn back to thier origional color. When the flasks were open air entered in and could have had a reaction with the liquids.

Part 4: Analizing the Data:
I am still inconclusive on whether the liquids are the same or not, they were both in different situations and reacted when I shook them simmilarly but not exactly the same, Im not sure whether that could have something to do with me opening and closing the flasks or not. If I had to guess though I would say that the liquids are different. The experiment when we drained the flask to equal the same amount definetly made the equality of the experiments better and also when i timed the amount of time it took for the liquid to turn color those were the best experiments. I believe that the factors neccisary to cause the liquids to change color would be a certain amount of air shaken into the liquid. The variables that could contribute to the amount of time it takes for the liquid to change colors could be tempurature, how hard the liquid is shaken and how long, also how much air is in the flask when you shake it. Based on my observations my Hypothesis was correct. I now have a basic idea of what factors affect the liquid in the flasks. More experiments would probebly give me additional information as to what is in the flasks for example a Ph test, a tempurature test or maybe adding another substance into the liquid to see how it reacts. Then thier would be more evidence to decide whether the substances are the same or not.
